Is it Important to have a 'Collection' of Putters?
I have 5 putters in my rotation and here is why:
When it comes to lowering your scores, no club in your bag matters more than your putter. Whether you're a weekend golfer or chasing competitive rounds, choosing the right putter can dramatically improve your consistency. Good short game is what comes to the rescue on your scorecard when you aren't hitting fairways or greens in regulation.
Most golfers are told to “find one putter and stick with it.” I’ve tried that—and honestly, it never fully worked for me.
Right now, I rotate between five putters:
-
A square back putter (Titleist Scotty Cameron)
-
A mallet putter (Taylormade Ardmore)
-
A blade putter (Taylormade Soto)
-
An old reliable putter (Strata)
-
A LAB putter
And instead of hurting my consistency, it’s actually improved my putting. Here’s why I keep all five—and how switching based on feel has helped me become a better player.
Putting is a arguably the most "feel" portion of the complete golf game- though some would argue chipping.
You can have the perfect stroke on paper, but if something feels off standing over the ball, it usually shows in the result.
That’s why I don’t believe in forcing one putter to work in every situation. Greens change. Speed changes. Confidence changes.
Having multiple putters gives me options—and more importantly, it gives me freedom to trust what I’m feeling that day.
Its also important to note that my "old reliable" Strata putter is simply in my collection because I cant get rid of it. I wont ever use it on the course again, but I grew to love the game of golf with it and for that reason it will sit proudly in my basement and be used for practice strokes while i'm watching a Jays game.
The Blade Putter: When I Want Pure Feel
There are days when I want complete control of distance and feedback. That’s when I reach for the blade.
It’s simple, clean, and brutally honest. If I strike it well, I know immediately—and if I don’t, I know that too.
I found myself using this midway through the season last year- I was playing rounds quite frequently and had a lot of trust in my putting stroke.
The Mallet Putter: When I Need Stability
Some days, the stroke just isn’t as reliable. That’s where the mallet comes in.
It’s more forgiving, more stable, and gives me confidence on shorter putts. The one drawback I have come to notice for my game with the mallet style putters is blowing a longer putt miles past the pin.
The Square Back Putter: My Middle Ground
If the blade is about feel and the mallet is about forgiveness, the square back sits right in between.
It gives me a bit of both without overcommitting to either.
This is probably the most versatile putter I own—and one I could easily game full-time if I had to. It also helps that for me, this is a Scotty Cameron, and if you have ever used a Scotty- you know they ooze confidence.
The LAB Putter: When I Want Everything to Stay Square
The LAB putter is different. It’s built to stay square without me having to manipulate the face.
At first, it felt unusual—but once I got used to it, I understood the appeal. I got this recently and I have not tried it on the course yet, although I am quite excited to. I feel like it can take a lot of thinking out of the putting stroke and reduce it to weight and line. Weather placebo plays a part- I will leave that up to you.
In conclusion, I want to say one thing: Golf is a roller coaster, it is a game where you are always searching for "the perfect fix" - although I have learned to understand that it is majorly a game of steady adjustments based on your feel. I believe having the options to rotate based on your confidence and what is working can hugely helpful for someone looking to iron out their golf game and continue to improve.
A lot of golfers think switching putters will hurt their game.
In my experience, the opposite is true—if you understand why you’re switching.
It’s not random. It’s intentional.
Each putter serves a purpose.

This blog post is not for the purpose of marketing the putters I have, but I am happy to chat about anything golf related if I can provide any type of help to you figuring out something that works for you. This hit way too close to home 😂I used to think carrying more than one putter was borderline insane… until last summer when I three-putted 7 greens in a row and snapped mentally on hole 8. Walked back to my car at the turn, dug out my ancient $10 garage sale putter (grip half falling off), and came back like a completely different golfer. My buddies thought I lost it… until I drained a 25-footer on 10 and didn’t miss inside 6 feet the rest of the round. Now I’ve got 3 putters in the trunk at all times like I’m running a black market pro shop 😂
Moral of the story: it’s not about loyalty… it’s about whichever putter decides to cooperate that day.
